Securing Your Hiring Process - SmartRecruiters

Overview ​

imper.ai helps secure video interviews scheduled through SmartRecruiters by verifying candidates before they join the interview.

The integration is embedded into the existing SmartRecruiters recruiting workflow. Recruiters continue moving candidates through steps and scheduling interviews using the standard SmartRecruiters controls - no separate verification workflow is required.

When a candidate reaches the protected interview step, imper.ai replaces the candidate's email address on the candidate record with a protected proxy address. SmartRecruiters uses that address when sending the interview invitation, allowing imper.ai to require candidate verification before redirecting the candidate to the meeting.

When the candidate moves out of the protected interview step, their original email address is restored.

Before You Begin ​

The SmartRecruiters integration must be connected and configured before imper.ai can protect interviews. See Integrating SmartRecruiters with imper.ai if you have not yet connected your SmartRecruiters account.

The integration relies on the candidate's interview step in SmartRecruiters to determine when interview protection should be activated.

Recruiter Experience ​

imper.ai is designed to operate within the recruiter's existing SmartRecruiters workflow.

Recruiters continue to:

  • Move candidates between steps in SmartRecruiters.
  • Schedule interviews using the standard Invite to Interview flow.
  • Send or resend interview invitations through SmartRecruiters.

imper.ai automatically activates protection when the candidate enters the applicable interview step. Recruiters do not need to manually create verification requests or replace meeting links.

This allows candidate verification to become part of the existing interview process rather than an additional workflow for the recruiting team.

Candidate Experience ​

From the candidate's perspective, verification is part of the process of joining their interview.

The candidate:

  1. Receives the interview invitation.
  2. Clicks the secured interview link in the invitation.
  3. Confirms their identity on the imper.ai verification page.
  4. Is redirected to the scheduled meeting.

The candidate does not need to access SmartRecruiters or initiate a separate verification process.

Security Experience ​

Security teams are not involved in scheduling or running the interview. They review verification results in the imper.ai console.

Security administrators can:

  1. Review each candidate's verification outcome and interview history.
  2. Examine the risk indicators detected during an individual interview session.
  3. Act on the recommended action associated with a flagged candidate.

How Does It Work ​

1. The Candidate's Own Email Address Is on File ​

Before the candidate reaches the interview step, the candidate record holds the email address the candidate applied with.

2. Recruiter Moves the Candidate to the Interview Step ​

The recruiter uses Move forward to advance the candidate to the interview step. Entering this step triggers imper.ai protection.

3. imper.ai Swaps In a Protected Proxy Address ​

imper.ai automatically creates a protected proxy address for the candidate and updates the candidate record in SmartRecruiters.

The proxy address temporarily replaces the candidate's original email address while the candidate is in the protected interview step. It keeps the original address recognizable, in the format {company_name}+{candidate_address}@proxy.imper.ai:

  • Original: derek.taylor87342@gmail.com
  • Proxy: acme+derek.taylor87342@proxy.imper.ai

No manual action is required from the recruiter to create or enter this address.

4. Recruiter Schedules the Interview ​

The recruiter schedules the interview using the standard SmartRecruiters workflow: open Invite to Interview, set the interview details, select the video interview format, and pick a time slot.

5. Recruiter Sends the Invitation ​

The recruiter adds the invite to the candidate using the standard template and selects Schedule.

Because the candidate record now contains the imper.ai proxy address, the invitation is sent through that address.

6. The Interview Is Booked and Routed Through imper.ai ​

The scheduled interview appears on the candidate record under Interviews, with the standard SmartRecruiters controls such as Resend invite still available.

7. Candidate Receives the Secured Interview Link ​

The candidate receives the interview invitation as part of the normal scheduling process, sent from the imper.ai proxy address.

The meeting link in the invitation is protected by imper.ai: instead of the meeting URL, the invitation carries a secure imper.ai verification link.

8. Candidate Confirms Their Identity ​

When the candidate opens the link, imper.ai asks them to confirm that they are the candidate before continuing to the meeting.

9. imper.ai Verifies the Candidate ​

imper.ai runs its verification checks while the candidate waits. The candidate is asked to keep the window open until the process completes.

10. Candidate Is Redirected to the Interview ​

Once verification completes, the candidate is redirected to the scheduled meeting and joins the interview as usual.

11. Candidate's Original Address Is Restored ​

When the candidate moves out of the protected interview step, imper.ai retires the proxy address and restores the candidate's original email address in SmartRecruiters.

Subsequent steps therefore continue using the candidate's original address.

If the candidate is scheduled for more than one video interview, the proxy address remains in place across all protected interview steps. It is retired only when the candidate leaves those steps.

Reviewing Verification Results ​

Security administrators review verification results on the Candidates page in the imper.ai console.

This includes the verification outcome for each candidate, the findings and risk indicators associated with individual interviews, and the recommended action for a flagged candidate. See Candidates Page Overview.

This separation allows recruiting teams to continue working primarily in SmartRecruiters while security teams can investigate verification findings in imper.ai when needed.
